Law Enforcement Qualifications

Requirements


Applicants for beginning positions within the City of Sherman Police Department must meet the following minimum requirements. By the date of the examination applicants:
  • Must be between the ages of 21 and 44 years of age
  • Must be able to read and write English
  • Must be free of disease or physical and/or mental defect that would in any manner interfere with the applicant performing the duties of a police officer
  • Must have a valid and current motor vehicle operator’s license
  • Must have eyesight that is correctable to 20/20 in each eye, and 20/70 uncorrected (colorblindness is a disqualifying condition)
  • Must have normal hearing ability free from hearing impairment
  • Must meet all legal requirements necessary to become eligible for future licensing by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
  • Must possess a high school Diploma or G.E.D. Certification

Note: An additional five points shall be added to the examination score of an applicant who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and has received an Honorable Discharge and passes the written examination.
