The Sherman Public Library Summer VolunTEEN program is for students ages 12 - 18. The purpose of this program is to allow teens in the Sherman area to enhance job skills, gain work experience, and grow as an individual while contributing to the library. Note: Sherman Public Library can not accept Court ordered community service restitution (CSR).
We have many volunteer opportunities available. Volunteer positions are best matched to your skills and interests. Below are some of the opportunities we currently have at SPL:
Programming AssistantBest for: Individuals who are adaptable, enjoy working with others, and have evening or weekend availability.Volunteers serving as program assistants will help make sure programs run smoothly for patrons. This will include set-up, assisting with instruction, and post-program clean up. Preferred availability is evenings and Saturdays as that is when most library programs are scheduled.
Program Promoter (can also be completed virtually)Best for: Individuals who are interested in content creation and marketing with knowledge of graphic designThese volunteers help promote and raise awareness about library programs and events through the creation of print materials, social media posts, and videos. This volunteer position can also be completed virtually.
Shelf ReadersBest for: Individuals who love to organize and prefer to work independently.These volunteers help with ensuring library patrons can find items in circulation with ease. This includes shelving, organizing materials and spaces as needed, and checking that books are in their correct order on the library shelves. This position requires being able to push carts up to 75 pounds and to bend, stoop, and stretch with reasonable accommodations.
Tech TimeBest for: Individuals with customer service experience and comfort with providing technology and computer assistance. These volunteers hold "office hours" for drop-in computer and technology assistance. Providing support to out library patrons with questions ranging from creating e-mail addresses, navigating a new phone or tablet, and other light troubleshooting.
Big Event & Decoration CrewBest for: Individuals who enjoy working in a team environment, working on art projects, and prefer short-term volunteer projectsFeeling crafty or have an eye for design? These volunteers help with creating and displaying decorations for large-scale programs, cleaning up and storage organization after events, and creating library displays to promote materials.
Technical Processing AssistantBest for: Detail-oriented individuals who prefer to work independently or behind the scenes.Occasionally, SPL needs volunteers to assist with processing materials in the collection. This includes processing books, board games, and DVDs to add or remove them from the collection.
