K-9 Division

The Sherman Police Department K-9 Units are an integral part of the police response. The police dogs that we use are specially selected animals that are purchased from a vendor out of Mississippi.

At this time, we currently have two German Shepherds in the Division - Corporal Kaleb Edwards and his partner, Baak, and Corporal Trevor Stevens and his partner, Gunner. Both dogs are trained for the detection of narcotics, evidence, persons and for handler protection.

The police dog handlers and their partners attend training for several weeks every year. During the training, the dog and handler learn to work together through basic obedience and agility. The dog is taught to locate and track human scent, search areas and buildings for suspects, evidence, and how to protect their handler. The handler learns to read and interpret the dog's change in behavior when the dog has located persons, evidence or contraband.

The K-9 Division has proven to be a valuable asset to the Department.
