9-1-1 and Cell Phones

Here's What You Need To Do In A 9-1-1 Emergency
  • Provide your cell phone number immediately;
  • Speak clearly - Answer all questions - Stay calm;
  • Describe the location of the emergency;
  • What kind of assistance do you need;
  • If your call is disconnected, call back;
  • Don't hang up until the dispatcher says it's okay.

9-1-1 Tips:

No Texting or Photos to 9-1-1.

Some 9-1-1 centers have bilingual 9-1-1 call takers and dispatchers. All dispatchers can add on an interpreter through the use of a language line service. The language line offers translation in more than 170 different languages.

A non-English caller may hear a short conversation in English, then some clicking sounds, as an interpreter is added to the 9-1-1 call. Please do not hang up before the call has been completed.
