The 2017 Summer Reading Program for Kids

Children birth to 11 years old are invited to sign up at the temporary library located at 1000 N East St between June 1st and July 29th. Kids will receive a reading log as well as a free book just for signing up!

Kids, birth to 5 years old, will do an activity log. Read more about their program here. Kids, 6 to 11 years old, will complete a reading log. They simply need to color a circle on their reading logs for every book or hour they read or are read to (audios count!). Read more about their program here. Weekly, both can log in at the library after completing one activity or after reading one book or hour to help build a special Lego creation. Each child gets one Lego per week. After completing their logs, children get to pick another free book, up to the fifth log. Every log, including those beyond the fifth, will be entered into a drawing for some goodies at the end of summer. The last day to claim books and enter the drawings is August 12th.

Kids are also invited to join in our free activities, including:

Story Times: Children 18 months to 5 years old with a caregiver are invited to hear stories, sing songs, do action rhymes, visit with puppets, play, and more! Once the child attends for four weeks, he or she will get to pick a favorite book to keep. Story Times begin June 6th and end August 9th; they meet every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. at 1003 N East St in the Activity Center Room #3. This building is across from the temporary library location at 1000 N. East St.

Monday Madness: Every Monday in June the Friends of the Sherman Public Library and the Sherman Parks and Recreation bring a performer to the Municipal Ballroom located at 405 Rusk Street. Performances are at 2 p.m.

Activity Packs: Due to the library's renovation and recent fire, our summer staple programs "Crafternoons" and "It's Elementary" will be put on hold. We still want to help make the summer a little more engaging and hands on, so we created Activity Packs for both our prereaders (preschoolers) and readers (elementary kids). Each contain either an art or science project and an activity challenge that can be completed with family members. Packs are given on a first come, first served basis and they are limited. New Packs are given out on Mondays.

Preteen Reads: If you are between 9 and 12 years old and love to read, come share your favorites and discover new ones with other preteens! Activities and snacks are included. We will meet every second Thursday from 4:15 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. During the summer, we will meet on June 8th, July 143h, and August 10th at the Activity Center at 1003 N East St, across from the temporary library.

Dino Days: Welcome to the Ice Age: Children 5 years to 11 years old are invited to earn a free ticket to Dino Days at the Sherman Museum located at 301 S Walnut! Read 9 books about the Ice Age, dinosaurs, fossils, paleontology, and archeology and get a ticket. Sign up at the library June 1st until August 11th. The last day to turn in a completed log is August 11th, however, as the last day to visit the exhibit is August 12th.
